LES ÉTAPES DU DÉVELOPPEMENT DU CAPITALISME AUX ÉTATS-UNIS: LA TENDANCE DE LA RENTABILITÉ ET DE LA TECHNIQUE DEPUIS LA GUERRE DE SÉCESSION
Cette étude est consacrée à l'évolution historique du taux de profit aux États-Unis depuis la guerre de Sécession, et à ses déterminants (technique et rémunération du travail). On distingue trois étapes dans le mouvement du taux de profit et de la productivité du capital: jusqu'à la première guerre mondiale, de la première guerre mondiale jusqu'aux années cinquante et depuis les années cinquante -dans lesquelles ces deux variables sont respectivement décroissantes, croissantes et décroissantes. Une configuration similaire est observée pour les taux de croissance du coût salarial et de la productivité du travail ( Lent / Rapide et croissant / En diminution). Les taux de croissance de ces variables ne se stabilisent pas dans la troisième période. L'étape intermédiaire correspond à une restauration spectaculaire de la rentabilité et de la productivité du capital associée à une accélération de la croissance du coût salarial et de la productivité du travail. Les première et troisième périodes sont similaires à beaucoup de points de vue.
STAGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF U.S. CAPITALISM: TRENDS IN PROFITABILITY AND TECHNOLOGY SINCE THE CIVIL WAR
The focus of this study is the historical evolution of profit rate, and its determinants (technology and labor remuneration), in the U.S. economy since the Civil War. Three distinct stages can be distinguished in the movement of the profit rate and capital productivity: 1) Up to World War I, 2) From World War I to the 1950s, and 3) Since the 1950s, in which these variables move downward, upward, and downward, respectively. A similar pattern ( Slow / Fast and increasing / Diminishing) is evident in the growth rates of labor cost and labor productivity, but the growth rates of these variables do not stabilize during the third period. The intermediate period coincided with a dramatic restoration of the profit rate and of capital productivity associated with an accelerated progress of labor cost and labor productivity. The earlier and later stages are similar in many respects.
